University Student Support Scheme

Overview

The University Student Support Scheme was developed to extend compassion and encouragement to students who are still within the four walls of learning but struggling to stay afloat. It recognizes that many young people in Nigerian universities have the zeal to study but lack consistent access to financial and moral support.

FECY Foundation launched this project to make sure that these students — especially those from low-income backgrounds — don’t lose their academic journey to poverty or discouragement. It is a continuation of our belief that education is a shared responsibility and that everyone deserves a fair chance to learn, grow, and succeed.

Purpose

The purpose of this scheme is to:

  • Support underprivileged students facing financial or emotional struggles.
  • Encourage academic excellence and perseverance despite life’s challenges.
  • Foster a community of gratitude and service where those who are helped are inspired to help others in the future.

We believe that a small gesture — a book, a meal, or a word of encouragement — can keep a student from giving up.

What We Do

  1. Identify deserving students: Through outreach on campuses and recommendations from peers or lecturers, FECY identifies students who show promise but face serious economic barriers.
  2. Provide educational support: This includes Stipends which can cover the cost/part of school materials, study guides, stipends for feeding or accommodation, exam registration assistance, or data for online classes and research.
  3. Offer moral and emotional encouragement: Beyond financial aid, FECY members connect with beneficiaries to provide mentorship and counseling, reminding them that their situation can change through persistence and faith.
  4. Promote peer service: Beneficiaries are encouraged to volunteer in FECY’s outreach projects, creating a cycle of giving and gratitude.

Impact

Since the launch of the University Student Support Scheme:

  • Beneficiaries have been able to complete their semesters successfully.
  • Students who were once too discouraged to continue their studies have regained confidence.
  • FECY has strengthened partnerships with student leaders to identify those most in need.
  • The most inspiring result is seeing beneficiaries turn around to assist others — proving that kindness multiplies when shared.

Stories That Inspire

  • A student who once considered dropping out was able to complete her exams after FECY provided small but timely financial support.
  • Another student used data assistance to finish an important online course.

Sustainability

The University Student Support Scheme is sustained through monthly contributions from members, donations from partners, and volunteer fundraising efforts.
FECY operates on the belief that many small sacrifices can create a lasting impact — and this program is a living proof of that.

Future sustainability plans include:

  • Partnering with alumni networks to sponsor students annually.
  • Introducing mentorship circles where professionals guide undergraduates through career and life challenges.

Looking Ahead

FECY plans to expand this initiative to more campuses across Nigeria, increasing the number of students reached each academic session. The long-term vision is to evolve this into a Student Empowerment Program, offering financial aid, mentorship, and leadership training under one umbrella.

“We believe that when a student stays in school, a dream stays alive.”
