Overview
The Back to School Project is one of FECY Foundation’s most heartwarming educational initiatives — a program rooted in empathy, dignity, and hope.
Every new school term brings joy to many children, but for others, it brings worry. Some families cannot afford basic school items such as notebooks, uniforms, sandals, or even a simple school bag. These children often return to school feeling left out or discouraged — and some do not return at all.
At FECY Foundation, we believe that no child should be held back from learning because of poverty or lack of materials.
The Back to School Project was created to bridge that gap — providing essential school supplies to children from low-income families and underserved communities, helping them return to school with confidence and excitement.
Purpose
The Back to School Project exists to:
- Support children whose families struggle to afford basic school materials.
- Encourage school attendance and reduce dropout rates in vulnerable communities.
- Promote equality in education, ensuring every child starts the term on a level ground.
- Restore confidence in children by giving them a sense of belonging and pride in their education.
Beyond giving materials, this project communicates a deeper message: “You are seen, you are loved, and your education matters.”
What We Do
- Community and School Outreach: FECY teams collaborate with teachers, local leaders, and parents to identify children in need within target communities. Priority is given to orphans, children of widows, and those from struggling families.
- Distribution of School Materials: Beneficiaries receive essential learning tools such as: School bags, Exercise books and textbooks, Pencils, pens, rulers, and sharpeners, School uniforms and sandals (where needed)
- Motivational Talks and Engagements: FECY volunteers interact directly with the children — sharing stories, words of encouragement, and fun activities to remind them that learning is exciting and their dreams are valid.
- Follow-up and Mentorship: After each outreach, FECY continues to engage schools to ensure the children remain in class and maintain motivation throughout the term.
Impact
The Back to School Project has touched hundreds of lives across multiple communities, putting smiles on children’s faces and relief in the hearts of parents.
- Many children who previously stayed home due to lack of materials returned to school happily.
- Parents expressed renewed hope and gratitude, especially single mothers and widows.
- Teachers noticed increased confidence and enthusiasm among supported students.
- The project built stronger community relationships and inspired local participation in future outreaches.
One touching story came from a young girl who said, “Now I can go to school with my friends again — thank you FECY.”
Moments like this remind us why we exist.
Sustainability
FECY Foundation sustains the Back to School Project through:
- Donations and partnerships with individuals, schools, and corporate sponsors.
- Volunteers’ monthly contributions and small fundraisers.
- Efficient resource management, ensuring every contribution directly benefits the children.
The foundation’s goal is to make this project a biannual outreach — carried out at the beginning of every school term — so that no child ever starts a term unprepared.
Looking Ahead
Our vision for the Back to School Project is to expand its reach nationwide — starting from urban communities like Lagos and Enugu to rural schools across Nigeria.
FECY plans to:
- Set up School Support Corners that serve as year-round hubs for educational materials.
- Partner with local and international NGOs to increase the scale and consistency of supply.
- Integrate mentorship and academic support programs to complement the material aid.
Through this project, we are not just giving out books and bags — we are giving back dreams, dignity, and a future.
“A child who goes back to school with confidence can go on to change the world.”
